Yuk just the thought of them makes you shiver !
But some of our canine pets are so inquisitive with bits and pieces they come into contact with they just scoop them up and GULP they're gone !
The only problem is that slug and snails carry a worm larvae (Angiostrongylus Vasorum if you would like the technical name!) and if your dog eats a slug or a snail by accident or just because they are curious and fancy a snack your pet could potenially be putting it's life at risk.
Slug come in all sizes (some very small indeed) and could be in that puddle your dog just drank from while in the park or was there one on his ball that was left out in the rain last night?
Yes these worms (commonly known as lungworm) are carried by slugs and snails and develop into further larvae while they are inside your dog and can migrate from their intestines to their heart and lungs causing all sorts of problems on the way sometimes FATAL.
This is why Ashwood Veterinary Clinic are now recommending a new product called ADVOCATE - this is a monthly spot on application for dogs that not only KILLS the lungworm larvae but will also kill fleas and their larvae on contact will also treat your pet for roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, sarcoptic mange, demodectic mange and ear mites - a very clever, effective and safe product indeed !
ADVOCATE is available from your veterinary surgeon by order for registered patients only as it is a POM product (prescription only medication).
